UBC to Vancouver on the Broadway Line Subway
As a student I recall being passed up by full buses at 41st and Crown headed to UBC. As a bus driver I've passed up many people on the way to and from UBC on the 4, 9, 14, 41, 43, 49, 480, 25, 33, 44, 84, N17 and of course the 99 B-line. It's clear that the region would benefit from rapid, reliable transportation and the Broadway Subway, in fits and starts, is surely coming to UBC.
Once built, the Broadway Line will be with us a long time which requires we take a long term view of its construction. This line will replace many cars and buses in getting students, staff, visitors, researchers and residents to and from UBC. We must get it right, and this clearly means it must go underground all the way to and from UBC. We can save money in construction west of Blanca using " cut and cover" construction, but it must be underground. Beyond the need to protect real estate values and a sense of natural community, the charm of Pacific Spirit park requires its silence, one does not truly feel like one is in the park until the sounds of traffic cease to become a constant companion. In the bustle of today's life that quiet is a vital and restorative resource.
The Broadway Line will become the main rapid and reliable connection between the research and residence of UBC and the rest of the Vancouver Region. This investment will secure the values of today's and tomorrow's homes at UBC, ensuring we have a viable "Climate Responsible" alternative to smog generating congestion. We have one chance to do it right and it must go underground all the way to UBC.
